How to watch Shaun White compete for gold in his final Olympics
The Shaun White Era comes to a close after his fifth Olympics.
“This has all had its amazing glow as I’ve decided this will be my last Olympics,” White, 35, said at a news conference Saturday. “I’ve given it my all, there have been some ups and downs on the way to get here. And with that I feel I’ve got stronger and better.”
White has become a staple of the Winter Games and is set to become the oldest man to compete in the Olympic halfpipe in Beijing.
White holds the record for most X-Games gold medals (13) and has captured the most Olympic snowboarding golds with one apiece at the 2006, 2010 and 2018 Olympics. If the California native is victorious once again in Beijing, he will become the ninth athlete to collect individual gold medals at four different Olympic Games — and only the second Winter Games Olympian to do so.

Is Shaun White favored to win the halfpipe?
While White has become a fan-favorite in the event since he emerged in the 2006 Olympics, he likely will not be returning home with new hardware. Injuries and age have lost White much of the dominance he had over the sport for almost 20 years.

Ayumu Hirano, Ruka Hirano and Yuto Totsuka of Japan have all landed a tripe cork — a trick considered impossible when White began competing — and have upped the possibility of a Japan sweep of the halfpipe event. Hirano, who came in second in the 2014 and 2018 halfpipe events, is widely believed to be White’s toughest competition for a gold medal.
