Ex-mayor guilty of sex with son’s underage friend as explosive divorce texts emerge

A DISGRACED mayor convicted of engaging in sexual activities with her son’s underage friend was criticized by her husband as a "cheat" and an "alcoholic" during their contentious divorce.

Following a trial full of emotional testimony, she was found guilty of carnal knowledge of a juvenile and indecent behavior with a juvenile.

She faces up to 17 years in prison if the judge imposes the longest terms for both counts.

A jury heard Roberts was heavily intoxicated, had taken a photograph with the teenager and was flirting with him during the party on July 20, 2024.

They then disappeared upstairs, and Roberts’ son and nephew snuck up and saw them having sex, afterward realizing the “weight of the situation” and began talking about how to stop it.

During the trial, it was revealed that Roberts had split from her husband and was later in an abusive relationship with another man who died by suicide months before the incident.

Her estranged husband, Duncan Clanton, testified against her, stating she confessed the sexual encounter to him the day after it happened.

The U.S. Sun can now reveal their divorce is still ongoing, having been stalled for months, and text messages show how nasty the split became both before and after she romped with her son’s friend.

The divorce docs were seen by The U.S. Sun before they were quickly sealed on Wednesday afternoon.

They were officially lodged on May 19, 2022, with Roberts listed as the plaintiff and Clanton as the defendant.

In one message sent on July 15, 2022, Clanton tells Roberts: “You really are cold-blooded.

“Just wanted you to know what a real piece of shi** you really are!”

She fires back, “Coming from you… that doesn’t mean a whole lot.”

He responds: “I hope you get everything you deserve. I wish you knew what it felt like, but you never will. Good luck.”

The exchanges swing from discussions about putting their two children first to heated accusations about the breakup and alleged “affair rumors,” which Roberts denied.

In one particularly scathing message, Clanton writes: “Funny how you call me psychotic and you were the one who left me for a cop or a damn dirt contractor!

“An alcoholic, cheating SOB! And you blame me around every corner for that. No telling how long you’ve been with that f***** as much as you’ve been to baseball games. Y’all are a perfect match.”

He adds, “You’ve never looked in the mirror and it shows how truly shallow you are. I’ll admit in the short term it has been extremely hard to move on but in the long term it will be a different story. Have fun living your propped-up life!”

He also scolds Roberts for painting him as toxic, adding, “Yet you’re the social media super-mom! People see through your bullsh** every time you make a post. Keep on!

“You’re the wolf. And I have never been toxic. You just quit and gave up. Own it and you man the f**k up!”

Just days after the crime occurred, Clanton and Roberts appeared to be in a good place, despite her admitting to having had sex with her son’s friend.

During the criminal trial, the jury was shown text messages Roberts reportedly wrote to Clanton, saying, “I f****ed up, and I respect you enough to tell you.”

In the divorce filings, a message from July 23, 2024, three days after the crime occurred, shows Clanton seems to be okay with her, despite her shocking admission.

He tells Roberts, “You are a great mom and that’s what what’s going to be your foundation. That’s what’s going to get you through it. You’re strong. Can you call me?”

Clanton later adds, “I won’t turn my back on you.”

She surrendered in August and was released 24 hours later after posting $75,000 bond.

A text message also presented in court during the criminal trial showed Roberts’ son messaging his mum horrified about what was happening.

“He is seventeen,” the boy texted his mother, also telling her that his sister was crying.

The victim was later confirmed to be 16 years old.

Roberts’ daughter also told the court she saw her mum and the boy “on top of each other” on the night of the party.

Witnesses said the teen boy was shirtless, but they did not see the “private parts” of Roberts or the victim.

The victim also took to the stand, saying he was so drunk at the party he vomited during one instance.

He said they kissed by the pool before Roberts suggested taking it somewhere private.

She then took her top off and pulled his pants down, according to the witness, before laying on her back.

“I was kind of dizzy,” he said. “I had to put my hands on the couch. My eyes were just like closed.”

He also testified: “While it was happening, I couldn’t feel my body.”

The victim’s mother later texted Roberts to ensure she was not pregnant and she replied to say she was on birth control.

The court was shown a screenshot of the message that Roberts sent to a group chat with her friends, in which they urged her to take Plan B.

A DoorDash driver also testified that he delivered an emergency contraceptive to Roberts’ house.

Text messages show that despite her arrest and resignation from office, she appeared to remain on relatively amicable terms with her ex, discussing how their children might need therapy and expressing a desire for them to continue being strong co-parents amid the mess.

In the divorce docs, Roberts also says, “While it is true that I resigned from my position as Mayor, this decision was made with the support of Duncan Clanton.

“In fact, he assisted me in drafting the resignation statement to ensure the decision was in the best interest of everyone.

“By his suggestion and with his support, this was an all-inclusive decision, not an admission of any wrongdoing whatsoever.”

She added, “I am actively seeking employment. My efforts have been crippled by the nature of the pending allegations and the resulting global media attention that followed.”

But in September, she back on bad terms with her ex, who texted her, “It hasn’t been one-sided. I’ve listened to you but you don’t accept the fact that you are in this position bc of your own actions, and I won’t let the kids suffer anymore.”

In May 2022, the former couple entered into a joint stipulation and judgment granting them joint care, custody, and control of their minor children.

They agreed to a shared physical custody plan, with neither party designated as the domiciliary parent, meaning neither had primary legal authority over the children.

Under the agreement, Clanton was ordered to pay Roberts $2,750 per month in child support.

Now, the arrangement is up in the air ahead of Robert’s sentencing.

Her attorney also filed paperwork in December seeking to overturn a previous ruling and recover alleged unpaid child support and legal fees.

Since then, two judges have stepped aside, the case has been reassigned, and no court date has been set — with a key document still sitting unsigned.

Nearly three months later, Clanton still hasn’t been formally served.

Roberts’ lawyer is urging the court to move forward, arguing the stalled service is keeping the divorce stuck in limbo and delaying any potential settlement discussions.
